In January of 2024, April reached out to CAA in need of urgent housing support. April, a federal employee in Veterans Services for 20+ years, had a traumatic background of domestic violence and unsafe housing conditions. In January, April found herself in yet another dangerous living situation, sharing a home where her belongings and safety were threatened. Due to pending charges, April was unable to receive Section 8 housing, so she connected with a case worker at CAA who was able to secure safe housing for her in February, as well as basic needs and hygiene items from our TLC inventory to get her back on her feet.
By September, April was a thriving community member, supporting the other residents in her apartment complex, taking part in the town Harvest Festival parade, and caring for the people around her through acts of service. She reached out to her case worker with this note:
"As I continue to recover from my own personal dilemmas, I remain positive by continuing to do what I have a passion for, and that is helping other people. The tears I shed currently are tears of happiness. I found a church that fits my religious beliefs and has helped me spiritually. Moving to Milton was the best decision I made. I live in peace and tranquility, and I am truly blessed! ...I want to thank you for being an instrumental part of my recovery! When I first met you, I was a weak and broken person who found myself in a situation that I never imagined I would be in, but it was because of you and many others in Union, Snyder, and Northumberland counties who saw the good in me and believed in me..."
In September, April arrived at CAA with a car full of donations for our TLC inventory to help other customers in need of basic hygiene items, and to give back to the place that supported her in her time of need. April continues to work in Veterans Affairs and her charges have been dropped.
